HISTORICAL NEWSPAPERS

  • The Guardian/Observer has consistently had a large circulation and has had a significant cultural and social influence.
  • The historical front covers are significant in terms of the Media Theoretical Framework as they illustrate a distinct use of media language to construct representations based upon the relevant contexts of the mid to late 1960s in the UK.
  • The media language used to construct representations in the 1960s front covers is representative of UK National broadsheets of the time, of which The Observer was a significant and, at the time, independent national newspaper

Social, Cultural, Historical and Political Contexts from the 1960's
    • In the 1960s, most producers and readers were white males, LGBT (male) producers did not go public and LGBT audiences would not expected to be celebrated or discussed by the mainstream media
    • Newspapers in the 60’s did not report so much on female or ethnic minority political leaders, especially as there we so few.
    • LGBT stories were VERY limited due to the closeted lifestyle by individuals/communities.
    • Celebrity culture did exist, but far less so than today.
    • Stories carried far more hard news.
    • Consumerism was beginning to develop in the 1960s, therefore newspapers did not carry much lifestyle/marketing content.
    • Social change was a major issue in 1960. Younger generations were demanding freedom (legalising homosexuality, making divorce and contraception available, legalising abortions, allowing more sexual content on the mass media). This was the complete opposite of the older generation therefore these social issues drove newspaper stories.
    • 1960s newspapers were key political opinion-formers and carried lots of political content. There was no 24 hour news, so this was one of the only ways for audiences to access political news.

    • dominant image of the queen showing the importance of royal family over the other articles
    • woman body figure stereotypically thin and in lingerie to attract men to buy for their partners sexualising male gaze theory
    • text is quite small and cluttered no spacing hard to follow
    • exclusion of lqbtq+ and people of different ethnicities
    • serif font formal for a higher class target audience
    • add as much
detail as possible as news is one of the ways to get information to the population

    • main photo of women and man
    • headlines 'Jackie; were very happy' showing women were involved has headline on women in 1968.  saying 'were' shows that she is only significant because of  her husband
    • layout is very wordy  its a broadsheet  and more formal
    • bold headlines  of "union postpone strike' as its a an to show he's more dominant
    • newspaper to get audience aware of whats happening  'Vietnam''police' 'strike'
    • global

    6th November:
    • Picture of a woman in a tight outfit to represent stereotypically woman as objects linking to male gaze
    • Its laid out as busy and a lot going on
    • Bold and formal by the master head
    • Lots of headlines to attract more readers and inform and maximise information and this time
    • Collum's however its not uniformed
    • The man at the the top in a suit to show mens superior to woman

The newspapers reflect 1960's context by including women in a negative and stereotypically way. They do this by sexualising women by showing them wearing lingerie to attract men. There is a lack of cultural and ethnic diversity and mainly show representation of white males and political leaders which are predominately male as well.
