Newspaper Ownership

How are newspapers funded? Explain in 10 words

They are funded by readers of newspaper.

Who are IPSO and what do they do?

They read all complaints and regulate newspapers and review.

Why are online-only newspapers not regulated? Explain in 10 words

It's difficult to regulate online newspapers too many things to regulate.

  • Newspapers are not usually profitable, but instead seen as a means of gaining social and political influence.
  • As a result, they are often owned by rich individuals rather than a conglomerate
  • Owners are not expected to interfere obviously with their newspaper(s). Doing this would destroy the newspaper’s credibility/reputation.
  • Editors who are interviewed frequently in the media (such as on Sky News or the BBC) always deny that their owner interferes with the content.
  • However, obviously the owner appoints the editor and they have similar views to that of the owner
The SCOTT TRUST owns the guardian/observer
THE SCOT TRUST VALUES:
  • Ensure the editorial independence of Newspapers
  • Appoint their editors
  • Ensure the newspapers continue their liberal traditions and do not affiliate to any political party
  • Promote the cause of freedom of the press = ANYONE must be free to set up a newspaper and newspapers must not be censored or controlled by the government. This allows for democratic freedom of speech and expression
The Observer & Guardian do not support one any political party. It is key that writers express different political views. As their political point of view is liberal, articles should criticise:
  • Extreme right-wing ideas (that limit freedom for some groups)
  • Extreme left-wing ideas (that limit freedom of individuals)

Guardian/Observer values and beliefs
  • They will have liberal values as they are owned by the Scott Trust whose job it is to ensure that newspapers are independent and liberal
  • Liberal values = tolerance, fairness and progress through media language, which makes it mainstream.
  • The target audience are middle class ‘progressives’ who read this newspaper for its liberal viewpoint
  • They celebrate and cover stories of different genders, races, ethnicities and sexualities as all people of the world are of equal worth (democracy)…again showing the are liberal
  • Collaborate with readers and others to have greater impact making readers feel heard and acknowledged
  • Report fairly on people as well as power and find things out.
  • Believe in the rights of each individual (human rights)
Representations therefore should:
  • Promote democracy (equality) and human rights
  • Celebrate individuality, diversity, tolerance and allowing opposing points of view
  • Care for people no matter what in the world they live in (internationalism)
  • Be open-minded about change

How is the Guardian/Observer funded?
They are funded by subscriptions and readers
Is the paywall effective? Why?
yes as they can get even more money and not rely on just their readers which allows them to make better content.

How has the paper responded to declining newspaper sales?
They have decided to go online to attract readers by using modern adaptations and using the internet this way its easier access. It also is on facebook instagram and youtube. 2007 The Guardian and Observer digital archive is launched, the first example of a national UK newspaper making its paper archive available online via its website.

HELP = Explore the increasing convergent nature o f The Guardian/Observer. It is available across different platforms, for example, print, online, online website comments and social media?

What might be the effects of the ownership on the paper’s content?
Find an example of a story online that reflects the paper’s ethos.
How do you know it reflects this?

This conforms to their standards as this picture represents a rise in equality and female power. The picture is of a woman in a suit which show's she isn't being sexualised so it fits with the ethos as it celebrates equality and genders. Though the image we can see she is an empowered woman which challenges historical stereotypes of woman.
